Keep Those Backups Current!

I spent years working at a college moving up from a computer lab aide to managing the technology department. I always stressed to students, staff, and faculty the importance of maintaining current backups. I'll bet you've already guessed what I did. Sure enough, I got lax and had a single drive that I put important data on. And not following my own advice, I had no backup of the data on this drive: years of photos, Gigabytes of music, many software packages along with their registration information. All gone. The drive could not be accessed at all. Not in Windows, not in Linux. Oh no, I was absolutely sick with this loss of all of this important information that was, against what I always preached, NOT BACKED UP. I began looking through what I had working in order to recover the data. Guess what. Programs that I thought might work were stored only on that drive. OUCH.
